This is an interesting conversation. I may be wrong, but I’m still pessimistic about the chances of App being awarded a medical school.
If it does happen, it will radically change the character of Boone/Watauga County. Many people won’t be happy with the changes.

At a breakfast event yesterday morning, Wells Fargo economist speaking on a variety of topics, including job growth....the primary reason the country has seen decent job recently numbers is due to healthcare industry. Given aging population, this sector is expected to continue to grow for the foreseeable future.
May not have any impact on a university, like App, getting a medical school or not... However, if you view a university from a business perspective to a certain degree, I would try to be investing in areas where demand for graduates will be. Not to say other industries will not continue to have opportunities. However, healthcare job growth was lapping the rest of the field compared to other industries per the slide... Similar model to Campbell and their law school. The law school relocated to Raleigh years ago

I just saw the UNCWs plan was approved. Personally I wouldn’t look at it as a slight or that something is wrong in Boone. After watching a couple friends go through med school and are in their residencies, I don’t think we have the infrastructure or medical system in the town to support training enough students to make it viable. ECU has a strong rural health program but they are on an island out there and it makes sense. I know Boone is as close to clt or Winston as Greeville is to Raleigh but I think they are different situations. To me It makes more sense wake to train clinicians here than us to have our own program.
I think focousing on other professional programs is the way forward and hickory provides a lot of space and opportunity when added to the main campus.

UNCW’s plan was approved by the UNC BOG. The State Legislature will decide whether or not it is funded.
