They will change it next year.

There is already an MOU with Notre Dame that if they are in the top 12 they automatically get in.

I expect changes to eliminate, or severely curtail G5 participation as well.

If Tulane and JMU can win their first round games it may not be immediate. If they both lose (or one win and one lose) then we won't see another g6 in the field again. I'm almost to a point (mentally) to where the g6 just does their own thing with playoffs.

This has been debated extensively not only on many threads here but nationally as well. There are many thoughts as to how any playoff should be structured. I don’t really think conference champs should get an auto bid since none of them are built for each team to have a balanced schedule- see Duke. No G5 will really have a chance to be rated in the top 16 each season unless they run the table. I’ve always hated that there is a dividing line between schools theoretically at the same level. Division 2, 3 and FCS don’t separate within themselves. Many here are adamant that they don’t incorporate a G5/NIT playoff as it rings of FCS again. At this point personally I couldn’t care less. It’s a broken system now and it’s really hard to see it going back.

Imo if Tulane and especially JMU win it actually speeds up the timeline to change the rules. The cfp is not about competition it’s about a media spectacle. Beating a mega brand like Oregon is a deadly sin.

Conference champions should absolutely get a bid. If they do not, then the conferences in football are pointless. Just ask Notre Dame.

Bowls will have to go away completely or be reinvented for there to be a breakaway and the G6 to get their own playoffs. Then you have to look at what makes sense financially for the networks because we all know that’s what drives this bus.

If it is truly going to be an NCAA championship, then every conference needs representation. There are ten conferences in FBS, All ten conference champions should make the field. They could do 6 at large bids and that's it, 16 teams no byes.
OR
They could up the number of at large teams and do play in games between the G6 conferences.

Rick Neuheisel on the Dan Patrick Show had an interesting take. He mentioned bowl games being front loaded at the beginning on the year. I didn’t get an opportunity to hear how this idea might be implemented but thought it was a cool concept to save “bowl games” because that’s a lot of dough.

The autonomous programs will need to split before taking away access to avoid a class action antitrust lawsuit. I know it won’t happen but I’m of the mind that if the 40-60 programs decide to split, the G teams need to set a firm “no scheduling” clause on the books for all sports. If G teams aren’t good enough for their playoff, they shouldn’t be good enough for the regular season. At a minimum, do not allow buy games with autonomous teams, must be home and home or they can just play themselves. Absolutely no G team is allowed to schedule ND. Maybe G teams can play A teams in an exhibition bowl game (neutral site or home of G teams) to open the season to bring Neuheisel’s idea to life.

The fans would need to follow suit and not watch any autonomous programming. See how those media deal payouts drop when viewership is slashed. It needs to be a steadfast boycott of all things autonomous.

The G teams can form their own real playoff where each conference winner gets in and then at-large selections. We can debate the best format 12 (6 auto/6 at-large) or 16 teams (6 auto/10 at-large). If you want to implement minimum standards for all G teams, this would be the time to do it. Whether it pertains to attendance, NIL, budget size, salaries etc., and actually enforce the rules with a financial penalty or playoff ban until compliant.

Players get 1 opportunity to transfer without penalty. After that, a player must sit a year regardless of the situation like a coaching change or program playoff ban.

Striking a media deal would be paramount to making this successful. I’d like to drop ESPN altogether if possible and have all the G fans cancel their ESPN+ subscriptions. Try to land deals with CBS, maybe TNT and some streaming services like Prime, HULU and/or Netflix.

I have nothing to add to this that hasn't already been said. However, the fact that this is even an argument shows how ridiculous, corrupt, and money-hungry college football has become. Can you imagine March Madness without any mid-major participation? Consider baseball- a G5 team has appeared in the championship series 25 times in College World Series history. It's only football that tries to lock out mid-major schools, and it's 100% about money. Everything strange (in a bad way) about college football points back to money.

Edit: It's also worth noting that the college football playoff is the only college championship that is not sanctioned by the NCAA. The NCAA does not officially have a D1 championship.

This is the point I think the committee made by leaving ND out...If we're going to have conferences and conference championship games they need to be respected.

More to the point the committe allowed Alabama into the CFP with a terrible loss to FSU while leaving ND out...I think they rewarded Alabama for making the SEC championship and couldn't do the same for ND...to drive their point home they included Tulane and JMU as conference champions....Now the ACC being a dumpster fire helped the whole situation.

The P5s care more about who has the ability to compete for a title than who actually deserves to. Thats such cry baby shit and more people should call them out for it.
