84 fouls called in the two games we played against them. That’s ridiculous.

This is where we miss Vasser.
Or not having Clarke/Njock be ready.
Maybe Brim should have gotten a little more run early on.

Don't think we will be losing Kerns anytime soon.

Zero 2nd half adjustments was the deciding factor IMHO. The Marshall big man fouled out with maybe over 10 minutes left in the game. Zero concerted effort to go to Wilson inside. They had no one that could guard him. Realize he had some foul issues. However, hug men are rarely called for a foul on offense.
In the last 3 minutes, a simple double team would have gotten the ball out of 6 hands.

Dodd has a tendency to dribble too far into the lane, gets stuck and either forces a bad shot or has nobody open to pass the ball to. On that first timeout where we were unable to get the ball in against their press (why don’t teams do that more?) it appeared that the coaches (namely Kerns) didn’t draw up any sort of play. I guess he just told them something? I haven’t seen every game but I can’t recall the extreme amount of fouls. The foul calls ruined an otherwise good game. Bottom line- we blew it.

Nope. This is why he’s still a mid major coach. Nothing wrong with it, but just have to expect things like this to happen on a regular basis.

Excluding the magical 2023-24 regular season, we have a 6-12 record in the last four games heading into the SBC tournament and since our 2021 tournament run, we are 2-4 there. Our end of season finishes don't provide a lot of confidence as the season comes to a close.
This is why I called the JMU game a typical late season Kerns game. Several thought it was a stupid comment.

Don’t get me wrong, Kerns is a solid mid major coach. However, what comes with that is weaknesses and reasons why he is still a mid major coach. At this point, I don’t think those weaknesses will ever be addressed.

He might make a "lateral move" to a better basketball market / school, and try to step up from there if that is what he wants to do. We all love Boone but its not the easiest basketball recruiting place.

Agree. He was gunning for the ETSU job early in his tenure here and then the Charleston job a few years back. I could see him moving up to an AAC school soon.

Overall agree. However, in those situations (which should be coached in September/October), the team should know by now..this is full court press set up inbounds play...if not, he should remind them in the TO.. unless I just cannot see it on the TV screen, I do not see any screens on the press inbound plays.

I'm not saying he won't leave for another job, but I have it on a trusted source that he and his family love Boone and he wants to build something at App. I don't know that he will leave for a lateral job, but it would be irresponsible of him not to at least entertain options, if not for the sole purpose of seeing his worth and if App can afford to keep him.

Marshall is a terrible matchup for us. I thought we did well and were in position to win. We just didn't. As long as we don't have to play Marshall again in the tournament, we'll be fine. This is only the 3rd time this season where we've scored over 70 and lost, one of the other times was also against Marshall. Win our next two and we're no worse than a 3 seed. Marshall has 3 games left and 2 against teams they've already lost to once. Troy is 3-4 in their past 7 games and still has to play S. Alabama, so a top 2 seed is still very much in play. It could be that the final game of the season at Texas St will determine the regular season championship.

He had 3 turnovers in this exact scenario against JMU. That being said, he played the entire 40 minutes and for the most part played very well. 19 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 4-7 from 3. He may have made some mistakes, but we're not even in that game without him.

I do wish Brim would have been put in late in place of a big man to give us a little more quickness on defense and some fresh legs.

We all need to keep in mind we're still only .5 game out of first with the tie breaker against one of the two teams tied for first. We also have a tie breaker against USA. We'll be no worse than 3rd if we win both games. Everyone except us and Texas State have three games left so a lot can and likely will change.

I’m still not over the botched inbounds play against Wake Forest several years ago. Last night was like reliving that nightmare all over again.
We burned too many timeouts on inbounds plays early that would have come in handy in the closing minutes.

We played better offense than I've seen all year other than the untimely turnovers late in the game. Marshall had a true freshman that had a career night with 24 points shooting 69% and 60% from 3. He was averaging 7 ppg. He likely won't do that again if we play them in the tournament so I don't feel like they're unbeatable at all.

We shot above our average in free throws but the poor shooting came late in the game which hurt to see. Everyone did well at the line other than Dodd at 33%. He was probably gassed at the end.

He does love the community - he will either be here another 10 years because he is entrenched as a local or will be gone in 1-2 years because he wants a higher career path achievement scenario. Its easy for them to stay given his success and he cares about where he lives, I dont consider him or his family a "runner" from job to job, but with NIL that has absolutely crushed his momentum because we are not a basketball school.
